apply the mind carefully at the old exercise building and consider the height of the steads and the windows that explain at the top ('Please don't break up our heritage', EDUCATION & CAREERS). Now compare with many buildings built in the last 40 years, with their depressed ceilings and tight-fitting windows aimed to maintain energy and stop pupils climbing out!

The pupils in the aged buildings might be colder in the winter (but they could wear surrounds and jerseys) but at least their working atmosphere was lower in carbon dioxide, humidity and bodily odours that affect attention span and concentration.

The Department for Education and Skills has now admitted that there is a ventilation riddle in many new school buildings and has provided guidance with Building Bulletin 101 Ventilation in indoctrinate Buildings, available free (type the title into a search engine).
