Merisant Worldwide Inc., the maker of the artificial sweeteners Equal and NutraSweet, has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia, charging that McNeil Nutritionals is engaging in false advertising for its sugar substitute, Splenda.
McNeil markets Splenda as a no-calorie sweetener that is "made from sugar, thus it tastes like sugar." According to Merisant's lawsuit,
